Yangon International Airport has completed its Emergency Exercise (Exercise Falcon) at 2.30pm today, which involved multiple stakeholders and tested various emergency and safety procedures.

We can confirm that today, 23 November 2017, Nil Airlines Flight 123 traveling from Nay Pyi Taw was involved in an accident at Nil International Airport at 12.40 hrs local time. The incident occurred at an unoccupied area away from the main runway. There were 27 passengers and 5 crew on board.

We have completed the safe evacuation of all passengers and crew on board, and we regret to share that there are 3 known fatalities. We share our deepest sympathies to their families and we are extending our full support to them during this difficult period.

Initial investigations indicate that the plane may have faced hydraulic issues, but further investigations are ongoing as to the exact cause of the crash. A full report is expected to be released in the coming weeks.

All injured passengers who require medical assistance have been safely transported to the nearby Insein and North Okkalar hospitals. Our priority remains with the passengers and crew involved and ensuring their well-being.

The airport’s rescue and firefighting have contained the initial fire that broke out when the accident occurred, and our emergency services team has evacuated the passengers safely which is our main priority. We are extending our full cooperation to the authorities who are investigating and managing the situation.

ABOUT THE EXERCISE

YANGON – 23 November 2017 – Yangon International Airport (YIA) will be holding its emergency exercise today. Smoke and sirens may be used during the exercise. The public is advised not to be alarmed.

WHEN:

Thursday 23 November 2017, from 12:30pm to 3:00pm

WHAT:

The exercise will test procedures for incident command, communication, and recovery in coordination with multiple agencies and various stakeholders.

The exercise is part of Civil Aviation requirements to periodically test airport readiness to prepare for incidents and accidents. Specific components that will be tested includes emergency response, incident command, inter-agency coordination, handling of information and service recovery.
